Welder running a joint on the base plate of a column

ASME IX · AWS

Welding procedure qualification

Before you weld a joint that will be inspected, both the procedure and the welder have to be qualified. ONIX writes, runs and documents that qualification to ASME Section IX and AWS, for its own jobs or for third parties.

Scope

What it covers

Scope is tuned to each project. This is what ONIX normally executes within this service.

  • Writing the WPS

Drafting the welding procedure specification for the project's material, thickness and position.

  • Procedure qualification (PQR)

Test coupon welding, mechanical testing and the qualification record that backs the WPS.

  • Welder qualification (WPQ)

Testing and certification of each welder for the procedures they will run on the job.

  • Welding dossier

Joint map, welder traceability per joint and a consolidated file ready for audit.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work for a job another company is building?

Yes. Procedure qualification is a standalone service: we run it for third-party jobs, including remotely.

How long does qualifying a procedure take?

It depends on the material and the number of essential variables. The schedule is estimated once the project's joints are reviewed.

What do you need to write a WPS?

Material and thickness, welding position, the intended process and the code the job will be inspected under. That is enough to draft the specification.

Where are the test coupons welded?

At the ONIX shop or at the client's facility, whichever suits the project. What does not change is the mechanical testing and the record that backs the procedure.

Do you qualify welders from another company?

Yes. Welder qualification (WPQ) is performed on the client's own personnel, for the procedures those welders will run.
